16 years designing accessible cycling routes and gentle outdoor programs for older adults across Ireland's Southwest.
Seán discovered his passion for senior cycling watching his own grandmother regain confidence and mobility through recreational riding at age 68. That moment changed everything. He realized cycling wasn't just about speed or distance — it was about freedom, independence, and quality of life.
After completing his Sports Science degree at University College Cork in 2008, he spent five years managing cycling clubs across Cork. But managing club schedules wasn't quite right. What he really wanted was to make sure older people could actually access great cycling routes without barriers, without intimidation, without feeling out of place.
His breakthrough came in 2013 when he led the community consultation process for the first phase of the Great Southern Greenway. Working directly with local authorities, he pushed hard on accessibility standards — proper surfaces, gentle gradients, rest stops, and clear signage. It wasn't glamorous work. It was about talking to people, listening to what actually matters to them, and then making sure the design reflected that reality.

Seán believes cycling shouldn't be reserved for the young and athletic. That's the core of everything he does. Whether he's consulting on route design, writing about bike setup, or guiding older riders on the Greenway, he's driven by one simple idea: accessibility isn't a feature you add on — it's how you build from the start.
His approach combines three things. First, practical route knowledge. He's ridden thousands of kilometers across Limerick, Cork, and Kerry, knows where the hills hide, where the surfaces get rough, and where you'll find a decent spot to rest. Second, genuine understanding of the physical and psychological needs of older riders. He's trained with Cycling Ireland's accessibility programme and holds certification in adapted physical activity coaching. Third, he listens. A lot. Because the best route design comes from talking to actual cyclists, not from desk research.
When you read his work, you'll notice it's specific. Not generic advice about "staying active" — actual details about saddle height, cadence, how to breathe on climbs, which routes are genuinely manageable. That comes from hours spent with riders, learning what works and what doesn't.
"Cycling shouldn't be reserved for the young and athletic. I believe every person, at any age, should have access to routes that feel safe, manageable, and genuinely enjoyable."
